Conrad Miller is an esteemed artist whose versatility and authentic personality has carved a permanent coveted space in Gospel music’s past, present and future. The Doylestown, PA resident, accomplished singer, composer, arranger and recording artist gained countless fans nationwide with his traditional soothing sound and hit singles from his 2009 debut solo project MY JOURNEY (produced by Grammy, Stellar and Dove Award winning producer Steven Ford) on his own Millcon Music label. “Amazing”, “Breathe On Me” and popular “Momma Prayed For Me” blared from radios all over the country.
His follow-up 2013 project, KEEP PRESSING, added a contemporary flair to the more traditional style that fans of Miller have been accustomed to. KEEP PRESSING (also produced by Steven Ford), included the feel-good title track “Keep Pressing” and the radio hit single “I Need You”. Spreading his musical wings a bit, Miller commissioned Ford to incorporate a bit of spice with lush, orchestral arrangements and full, bold instrumentation to the project. KEEP PRESSING contains a mix of soulful, heart-stirring songs “He’ll Never Let You Down”, classic favorite “Center of My Joy” and “Our Prayer”, inspired by THE LORD’s PRAYER.
Music has always been a part of Miller’s life. Born in North Little Rock, AR, the Grambling, LA native grew up playing piano and trumpet. While in school, he grew musically, singing in a variety of choirs and ensembles, playing in bands and jazz ensembles. He started an R&B group along with his brother Doug, an accomplished jazz saxophonist and member of The Count Basie Orchestra. Their group, The Soulful Seven, performed throughout the US over a five year span and eventually was signed to a recording contract with MGM Records, alongside label mates Lou Rawls, The Righteous Brothers and Donny & Marie Osmond.
Conrad garnered further musical training at Fort Hays Kansas State University. He went on to receive a full scholarship for graduate work in voice and opera at The University of Michigan. Conrad’s incredible talent has afforded him the opportunities to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York, the iconic Washington DC Kennedy Center and tours throughout Europe and the Canary Islands.
Despite a burgeoning songwriting career, Conrad abruptly put his pen down for about twenty years although he continued to sing. But in 2001 he rededicated his life to the Lord and after all those years of not writing any songs, his inner muse re-emerged. Songs flowed from him constantly, but he was a bit hesitant to step out as a solo artist. Ultimately, it was the untimely death of his 16-year old daughter Lauren that brought to focus how short and precious life really is. He concentrated himself, immersed in his writing gift and released My Journey and Keep Pressing - his collection of songs of hope, jubilation and motivation.
Having a career span of over 20 years, Miller has nurtured his gift and shifted with the obvious changes in music and the Gospel industry. He has continued to remain relevant in an ever-changing industry garnering respect of musical colleagues and a faithful and increasing fan base. “The key to remaining relevant is to be dedicated and focused in your walk with the Lord, remaining in prayer, meditation, study, and worship,” he articulates. “Secondly, your music and your message must remain relevant. That doesn’t mean you change your style, it’s about keeping your sound fresh,” he continues. “Third, it’s about surrounding yourself with a “team” that helps stretch you creatively and musically. It’s an ongoing process!”
“One of the main changes we’ve seen is the shrinking of outlets for Gospel music - the consolidation of recording and distribution channels and closing of many radio stations,” he expresses. “To adapt to this shift, my approach has been to expand my offerings by including a greater variety of music on my projects which include singing songs written by writers other than myself.”
And with that, Miller has begun working on an all new project to be released in 2015. He’s gathered a brilliant assemblage of producers and songwriters: Stellar Award Winning vocalist/arranger Earl Bynum, Garland “Miche” Waller (former musical director for John P. Kee) and noted songwriter Martin Luther Wardlaw (of The Wardlaw Brothers) “This new project will focus on songs of praise and jubilation, acknowledging that we were created to praise the Lord,” Miller states. “Like the last project, the new project will have musical variety from a style standpoint. There will be straightforward Praise and Worship songs, ballads, and even a bit of quartet, which harkens back to my first project.” he continues. “The other musical difference is that, unlike prior projects, which used small ensembles for background vocals, several of the songs on this project will employ a full choir as background.”
As Conrad Miller continues to create new music, it is evident that he is an undeniably genuine talent who has impacted multiple musical genres. Although he is a technically trained vocalist and musician, apt in various styles of artistry, his destined divine anointing and appointing is to share and spread the Love of Christ through music.
